  • TRIP "MEKNES, VOLUBILIS, MOULAY IDRISS" (1 day trip)

    Адрес:
Riad Alassala Fes, 11 Derb El-Hamia, Fes, Morocco .

After a delicious breakfast at our Riad Alassala, your driver will pick you up at the exact time agreed. Today we head to Meknes, the Ismailia capital,  then continue to the holy city of Moulay Driss via the ruins of Volubilis, the Roman City and back to Fez.

Meknes is named after a Berber tribe (Miknasa). It has many interesting historical and cultural monuments to name but a few: The Dar El Makhzen palace which contains a 2 kilometer long corridor formed by 2 large walls. It was once Moulay Ismaïl's palace.

The Bab Mansour gate was named after the architect who built it in 1732. Dar El Beida is a 19th-century palace built by sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. The Royal Military Academy current resides here.

Volubilis, a fertile land once prospered from olive growing, which led to the creation of fine structures with mosaic floors. The Romans, Latinised Christians, and Islamic settlement all took turns inhabiting this area. Volubilis was abandoned by the 11th century. Most of the local population relocated to the new town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, 3 miles away. The ruins remained until they were damaged by an earthquake  during the mid 18th century, and further more when Moroccans seeked stones to build Meknes. Some of the structures were restored after the French ruled Morocco. Today, Volubilis is recognized as one of the best preserved colonial towns from the Roman Empire.

After a delicious breakfast at our Riad Alassala, your driver will pick you up at the exact time agreed. Today you will drive to one of our most favourite and recommended destinations: The "Blue Pearl" of Morocco. Chefchaouen is a small, quiet, picturesque city located in northern side of Morocco. The city is named after the shape of the mountain tops above the town, which look like two goat horns (chaoua). This city is known for its buildings painted in shades of blue. Situated on the Rif mountains just inland from Tangier and Tetouan, the city was discovered in 1471. It was a small fortress by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami.

Chefchouen is a popular location for its native handcrafts such as wool garments and woven blankets, which are not available anywhere else in Morocco. The native goat cheese are also a popular hit.

Diving in the city blue color, you will discover the shady alleyways, the white washed houses and several cafes and restaurants in the main square that is often lively with locals and tourists alike, what brings a quiet friendly atmosphere.

Those restaurants are overlooking the grand Tariq-Ben Ziad mosque and the latter is built in an Andalusian style like many other buildings in the city, such as the magnificent Kasbah and the Hispanic flavoured town at the centre of the medina.

At the end of this eventful experience we will return to Fez.
